Sciencedude ~ Quick takes on the fast-moving world of science

Pre-dawn lunar eclipse dazzles O.C.

Orange County residents (and a guy in Canada) were ready with their cameras before dawn today when the moon slipped into total eclipse. Here’s a sample of the images they sent by e-mail:

eclipse_p8e5258resized-copy.jpgDeeDee McGann-Gollwitzer of Laguna Hills took this image while “half awake in my back yard away from street lights, etc.” The moon was just reaching totality.

img_0290-copy.jpgGar Travis watched the eclipse from UC Irvine. He took more than 500 images, including this one, which is how the moon looked to my eye about 2 a.m.

moon-shots-047-copy.jpgDave Mikkola of Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada, took this photo at 5:30 a.m. his time. I’m not sure how he knew about Sciencedude. But we’re grateful that he thought of us.

lunareclipse082907mr01a.jpgThis photo was taken by Register staff photographer Mark Rightmire, who visited the star party at the UCI Observatory as people were gathering for the eclipse. Interesting shot, huh?

dales-copy.jpgWe also got this image from Dale Dellinger of Irvine. It left me wondering if the camera sees more than the human eye. At the peak of the eclipse, the moon resembled a dirty penny to me. But Dale’s image shows the moon to be redder. Interesting.

transfer-folder-053-copy.jpgThis photo from Carl Goode of Huntington Beach is similar to Dellinger’s. But it has a darker shading. I’m ot sure why; sky conditions were the same in Irvine and Huntington Beach. Goode used a Canon 1D Mark III camera.
