uci_stem_cell_research.jpgUC Irvine is one of the 30 best large research universities in the country, based on the productivity of its faculty, says a new study by Academic Analytics, a for-profit company that partners with the State University of New York.

Irvine finished ahead of such well-known institutions as the University of Chicago and University of Southern California.

Academic Analytics produced the rankings by measuring how productive faculty are in publishing books and journal articles, having their work cited by other journals, obtaining federal research funding and earning various awards and honors.

The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index was then used to evaluate doctoral programs, which are the heart of a research university. The rankings are far different than those produced by U.S. News and World Report, which are heavily tied to such things as a school’s reputation and the SAT scores of students.

uci_classroom_concentration.jpgThe new study places UCI 26th among its top 30 research schools. The top three schools: Harvard, MIT and Columbia.

Academic Analytics also ranked universities in broad academic categories and in specific disciplines. Those figures place Irvine first the broad area of Computer and Information Sciences, second in Family, Consumer and Human Services, 16th in Biological and Biomedical Sciences and 24th in Engineering.

At the discipline level, UCI ranks fourth in Information Science/Studies, and fifth in mathematics and in geology, which actually refers to Earth System Science programs.
