Cancer News NetworkUC Irvine is seeking candidates for a clinical study on VBLOC Therapy, which the campus describes as a potential alternative to current weight loss surgery.

“Existing weight loss surgeries such as gastric bypass and gastric banding work by altering anatomy, restricting both the amount and types of found that may be eaten,” UCI says in its study solicitation. “VBLOC Therapy is delivered through an implantable system that blocks nerve signals between the abdomen and the brain without altering anatomy. The purpose of the research is to determine the safety and effectiveness of VBLOC Therapy.

“Research will be conducted at UCI Medical Center (in Orange). Clinic visits will be required weekly during the first month following system implantation, then monthly thereafter during the first year, and every three months for the following four years.”

People interested in the study should call 888-717-4463, then press 1, then press 1 again. The lead researcher is Ninh Nguyen, medical director of the Bariatric Program.

UCI says you can be considered as a study candidate if:

1. Your BMI is between 40 and 45+

2. Your BMI is between 35 and 40 and you have medical evidence of at least one of the following conditions: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea (confirmed by a sleep study)

3. You have not been diagnosed with diabetes

4. You are between the ages of 18 and 65

5. You have previously participated in a supervised weight loss program for at least 6 months and you have failed to maintain weight loss

I called this number today (supposedly in Orange) and was directed to another number…. Seems the study is coming out of Minnesota!
I wonder if Weight Watchers count as a failed diet program??? I am awaiting their return call sometime this week…. Curious to see how long it takes to get some information.

If you are a diabetic with hypertension and have had multiple health problems yet you can’t afford to travel around the world, then what do you do? I have two children who constantly remind me that I am all they have and we have tried repeatedly to find someone in this world that has the heart to reach out and touch . . . so I don’t qualify cuz I can’t afford it.
