USC study says men are happier than women

August 17th, 2008, 3:00 am · 25 Comments · posted by Gary Robbins, science writer-editor

menwomen-copy.jpgThe University of Southern California says in a new study that “women start adult life happier than men, but end up less happy” in later years — a change largely based on shifting feelings about family life and money. read-study.pdf

Early on, says the study, “women are more likely than men to be in unions, and this makes for greater fulfillment of both family life and material” goals. But it doesn’t stay that way; as they age, “women are less likely to be in unions” and their sense of happiness declines.

Women tend to experience this turnabout in their late 40s, when men are achieving more of their financial goals, says the study by USC economist Richard Easterlin and University of Cambridge sociologist Anke Plagnol, who earned her doctorate at USC last year.

Their conclusions are based on an analysis of two major national opinion surveys that collectively involved about 21,000 men and 25,000 women. The findings are open to lots of interpretation because thousands of the respondents were not married.

Do you believe that women are less likely than men to be happier with life in their later years?

I don’t believe women are only happy in a union later in life. Women achieve financial goals; the study seemed slanted toward men.

  • no says:

no, for some reason, I think it’s all in the individual and their experiences.

  • weetee says:

Women achieve financial goals? yes i saw many beauties at MatchRich.c o m which is an club for the celebs, wealthy singles and admirers!

  • kevin says:

Is this the result of “Women’s Liberation?” A generation of women just as miserable as men? Wow!

  • OCVOICE says:

feminism told women that they don’t need men, that they should choose a career over being a stay-at-home mother, that sleeping around will be liberating…

these are contradictory to a woman’s nature, and this is why women are so unhappy today…

  • CAN says:

Ahh it’s really not because of finances people.

    WAKE UP.

    IT’S CALLED GETTING FED UP.

The reason being is because by the time the couple reaches 40,

the children are fairly grown, the man is way too much into his work to escape the responsibilities of the home and family.
    Starts messing around.

The man neglects his wife and family, and the woman is carrying the whole load.

It is a result of ungodly behavior, and irresponsibility being as acceptable.

I am MUCH happier today than I was when I was younger (I’m 46) and I did not marry when I was young and have no children.

  • Mark says:

Women are fickle, you never know what they really want, I think that even they do know what they want. As they get older they seem to lose their perspective and what is really important they start to get self centered.

  • bcstiles says:

WOW CAN! You have some real issues! Try reading the article again and don’t put you’re life into it. Just read the study.

Men don’t cheat on there wives unless they aren’t getting what they need at home. O by the way if you didn’t want that bigger house you’re husband wouldn’t have to work all of the time.

  • paul torres says:

women tend to be overweight in ther later years looking less attractive to men.it`s easier for men to find mates in the 40 to 50 age bracket than women. men take better care of themselves.

  • John Doe says:

This study is slanted big time towards couples and needing to be a couple to be happy. Hogwash.

Though I am a guy, never plan on having kids (fixed that issue already) and never plan on getting married. I’m very sure I’ll be very happy in life, as I have been.

  • Bossco says:

Some men experience a mid-life crisis and become born-again teenagers to combat the negative feelings.

  • Dawn says:

40 year old men can leave their wives (of 15 years) and start dating a 20 year-old woman, so of course men are more happy at 40. 40 year old women are more likely to be “stuck” with their lives at 40.

  • Jennifer Gates says:

Absolutly women are less happy after 40’s, and it’s mainly due to men…..(-”

  • He-Man says:

This story is some bull. Men are not happy bc women suck the life and happiness out of Men.

  • nostrodomus says:

what a depressing msg thread! I am no longer happy after reading these posts and as such, have skewed hapiness back to the ladies.

  • Patti says:

What do you need a man for? Fixing things? Ha ha Mine left me and the kids for a bimbo. And we are happy NOW!

  • DABIGRAGU says:

Don’t fret people, results will flip-flop next year, about the same time they “discover” coffee is now good for you (or is it bad’s turn next year)

  • Jay says:

    Men age like wine.

    Women age like milk.

    Nuff said.

  • Lydia says:

haha ya right, I know more old guys that more pregnant than my actually pregnant friends!! Lay off the beer guys!

  • nancy says:

most of the the guy comments just show me how rude & thoughtless men can be. On a personal level, no wonder my happiness level has decreased. I’ve read other studies that show married men are the happiest of all. That’s because the woman is doing a lot of the mundane crap–sacrificing herself for a self-centered, immature man. Enough!!
