UC Irvine has been ranked among the top 50 national universities by US News and World Report magazine, tying with UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara for 44th place among schools that offer a range of undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral programs.
UCI also placed 44th in the last US News rankings, which came out more than a year ago.
The ranking represents an overall steady upward climb for Irvine, which is more than half a century younger than Davis and Santa Barbara. And the rankings come only weeks after UCI reported that it had set new records in research funding (story) and private donations.
Three UC campuses — Berkeley (21), UCLA (25) and San Diego (35) finished ahead of Irvine.
UCI finished just behind the University of Washington — long a major power in scientific research — and just ahead of the University of Texas and Penn State University, two of the country’s largest universities.
The US News rankings are highly influential, shaping student’s decisions on where to apply for college. They’re also widely read by parents, many of pay for all or part of their children’s education.
