1.9 microquake near Fullerton Airport

October 6th, 2008, 4:54 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Gary Robbins, science writer-editor

A magnitude 1.9 microquake occurred near the intersection of West Valencia Drive and Brookhurst Street in Fullerton at 2:40 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey says. The quake began 5.2 miles beneath the Earth’s surface, in a region that has offshoots from many major quake zones, including the Whittier-Elsinore system.  Such microquakes usually only represent minor movement of faults. But they can also be foreshocks to larger events. (Click map to enlarge.)

This is the second time in about a week that a quake has occurred near an airport. Last week, a 3.0 quake hit near the northern edge of LAX, causing brief shaking but not releasing enough energy to disrupt airline flights.
