Strong winds that began just after midnight are continuing to whip Orange County, kicking up clouds of sand along Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach and Bolsa Chica, jostling palm fronds across Anaheim and Orange, and churning up the ocean along the length of Southern California.

The wind has gusted to 30 mph in Huntington Beach and Aliso Viejo, 29 mph in Laguna Niguel, 26 in Aliso Viejo and Anaheim, 25 at Los Alamitos, 24 at John Wayne Airport, Garden Grove and Laguna Beach. The winds are generally out of the south-southwest and are expected to last into this evening.

Although skies are generally clear, the National Weather Service says the winds could push isolated showers ashore this afternoon and evening.

The winds were driven by a weak low pressure system that will keep temperatures from rising above the upper 60s in many areas, the National Weather Service says.

Motorists are advisored that the winds will last for most of the day in the San Bernardino Mountains, where swirling dust can cause driving hazards.
