South O.C. feels 5.0 quake on U.S.-Mexico border

November 20th, 2008, 12:26 pm · 21 Comments · posted by Gary Robbins, science writer-editor

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake erupted at 11:21 a.m. just below the U.S.-Mexico border, releasing seismic energy that was felt in Irvine, Aliso Viejo, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, Orange, Laguna Niguel and Fountain Valley, says the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Did You Feel It?” feature on the web. The quake began 9.3 miles beneath the Earth, 25 miles south-southeast of Calexico, generating shaking felt as far north as Los Angeles. High rises also shook in downtown San Diego, the U.S.G.S. says. There were no immediate reports of significant damage from the quake, which is the largest shaker to hit Southern California since a 5.4 quake erupted just east of Yorba Linda on July 29. • Catlee says:

I didn’t feel it. The article doesn’t say how much or how little the shaking was felt in OC?

    • ocballfan says:

I live near Mission Viejo, and didn’t feel it!

    • Note to readers: I’ve had to delete/withhold five messages that carried a racial tone. From this point on, I’ll permanently block the I.P address of anyone who attempts to post racial remarks on this blog. Gary Robbins, The Register

    • casm says:

Hmmm What could be racist about an earthquake? Not where my head is I guess… Anyways, Gary, Thanks for keeping the anonymous masses from saying things they wouldn’t dare to say publicly. Now, can you go to the Yahoo Message Boards and do something about all the incessant hateful all-sides political bashing?

    • bpsqwerty says:

casm you substituted the term “racist” for the word “racial”. they are two different, though related concepts. worth noting

      to Gary Robbins,
You should make the rule be that you must have atleast a high school diploma, have a job and everybody must be considerate to each other in order to post a comment.. Guaranteed you’ll get more mature people posting because im sure these idiotic people dont have either of the two.

    • Loretta says:

In Lake Forest and didn’t feel anything.

    • Jerry says:

      Gary,

it is interesting to see how amazed people are regarding how someone could take an event and mask it with a racial overtone realizing where the event took place. Secondly following up the comment regarding having a high school diploma and a job; granted having an education and being employed are noble and desirable but they do not guarantee the person will have common sense or couth when it comes to how they express their opinions…

    • rob says:

Didn’t feel a thing in Footholl Ranch.

casm I wish you could find another word other than “hateful” which is now politically charged, overused, and changed in meaning. Lefties are using it to attack., How about “Offensive”?
