O.C. coast bakes as sea breeze pulls another vanishing act

September 2nd, 2009, 12:07 pm · 14 Comments · posted by Gary Robbins, science writer-editor

beachThis was supposed to be the day the heat wave greatly eased its grip. Well, it hasn’t. At least not along the coast of Orange County, where the lack of a strong sea breeze is allowing temperatures to spike into the 80s. The average daytime high temperature on the coast this time of year is in the low 70s.  The sea breeze kicked up briefly on Tuesday, but then disappeared. There’s been little onshore wind for about a week. Today’s warm conditions are also being fed by the ocean, which is really warm (73-74 degrees).  So any breeze that does come ashore is moist and warm, raising the humidity level. (Read more about the warm water.)

In an unrelated matter, the National Weather Service says that some thin smoke from the Angeles National Forest wildfires drifted into parts of Orange County overnight. Here is the South Coast air quality map.

Here are the coastal highs through 2:30 p.m. today:

  • Newport Beach: 91
  • Huntington Beach: 90
  • Bolsa Chica: 84
  • San Clemente: 84  (humidity 72%)
  • Sunset Beach: 81
  • Dana Point: 81
  • Seal Beach: 80  (humidity 78%)

And the inland highs …

  • Dove Canyon: 99
  • Tonner Canyon: 99
  • Foothill Ranch: 98
  • Fremont Canyon: 98
  • Fullerton: 95
