Chapman University researchers are looking for volunteers to participate in a study of osteoporosis, a form of bone lose that makes bones more prone to fracture and which can cause considerable pain.

As in most studies of this kind, Chapman is looking for people who fall into certain categories. Specifically, researchers Frank Frisch and Fred Caporaso need:

  • Caucasians from the ages of 16 to 25 and those who are 70 or older;
  • Hispanics, Asians and African Americans who are 16 and over;
  • Healthy people who are not on medication for osteoporosis.
  • People who live  in Orange County.

The university says no health insurance is necessary. The university will cover the costs.

“We ask the participant to keep a food journal, eating or drinking whatever they would like, for 3 days,” says Chapman. ” When they have completed the food journal and filled out 3 simple forms they will return these to Chapman University in the envelope provided.  We will then schedule them for a half hour appointment at a doctor’s office in Anaheim Hills where they will draw blood and perform a DEXA (bone scan).  When the appointment is over, the participation is complete.   The results of the 3 tests, nutritional analysis, blood draw and DEXA will be sent to the participant and the doctor of their choice.  They can discuss the results with Dr. Frisch here at Chapman University or their own doctor which ever they feel more comfortable with. ”

To learn more about the study, call program manager Nicole Michaelis at 714-997-6573. You may be asked to leave a message. They’ll get back to you. You can also learn more a www.chapman.edu/BoneStudy or by sending an email to bonestudy@chapman.edu.
