November 2nd, 2009, 1:01 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Gary Robbins, science writer-editor

todaysquakeA magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred a 11:27 a.m. today on the U.S.-Mexico border south of the Salton Sea and Brawley and about 10 miles west of Mexicali.  The latest quake began 3.5 miles beneath the surface and was preceded over the past two days by a series of smaller quakes, including two measuring 3.0. The quakes  are occurring in a general region where much larger shakers have occurred in recent decades. But here is no sign that today’s quake will lead to something in the 6.0 or 7.0 range.
