As forecast, dry Santa Ana winds roared to life overnight, gusting to 41 mph in lower Fremont Canyon, a short distance from where similar offshore winds stoked a wildfire in the Windy Ridge area of the Anaheim Hills last week. The winds also reached 28 mph early today in the Anaheim Hills, 24 mph in Trabuco Canyon and 22 mph in Tonner Canyon. A wind advisory is in effect for northeastern Orange County’s canyons and foothills through 2 p.m. Monday. But the winds will fade this morning, only to regain strength late tonight.

The good news: the relative humidity is quite high (60 percent in Fremont Canyon), reducing the chances of wildfires. And the winds blew away the lingering moist clouds, making way for clear skies and rising temperatures. Forecasters say that today’s high temperature will reach 71 degrees inland and rise to 76 on Monday, or 4 degrees above average.

The small craft advisory is expiring for the county’s coastal waters, as is the winter weather watch in the San Bernardino Mountains. However, motorists will  have to exercise caution in the  mountains, where 6 inches of snow fell in some areas.

As we’ve noted before, precipitation is still badly needed in Orange County. Since Jan. 1st, John Wayne Airport has recorded 3.17” of rain, which is 7.54” below average. Fullerton Airport has recorded 6.58”, or 3.27” below average.  The county mostly received trace amounts of rain last night and early today.

Figures…… I just washed my truck.

  • Is it cold in your neighborhood?

  • Eric Cooper says:

aas of 4:45am in Lake Forest–brief heavy downpour with lightning and thunder—rain at last.. NWS Radar shows more intermittant showers on the way from the west. I hope that we are finally nearing the end of the drought.

    • Laura says:

Same thundercell hit us here in Mission Viejo. Hurrah! Rain at last! Cold here, probably in the 50’s. Nice day to curl up and read.

  • dohenydaze says:

Cold rain in Capo Beach. Yaaaay!

  • John says:

No precipitation yet in Brea. Sunny and 55 deg.

  • Rick says:

Intermittent showers for the past 2 hours with brief torrential rain. Warmer here (50’s) than it has been during the past week at this hour (high 30s/low 40s).

Clouds rolled over Huntington Harbour this morning but the sun is now out with a chilly breeze. Ducks don’t seem to mind the cold water!!

  • sylvia says:

Five little drips of rain here in Laguna area…Wish it would really rain for a few days..We need it so badly…..The come on with our good ole Sunshine!

  • Joe Schmuckatelli says:

Clear blue skies here in Orange. Bring the rain!

  • sylvia says:

hmm its only 8;07am……… yet it posted on here as 9:06 am

  • Loufca says:

It’s 55 in RSM at 8:49. Had some rain before day break. More clouds coming in, good!

Is it OK to have a fire in your fire place, or did the AQMD outlaw them at this time of the year?

  • Lauren says:

“Today’s high temperatures will only be in the upper 50s and low 60s, making it feel (to Southern Californians, anyway) like winter, which begins in about 3 weeks.” –best line, b/c it’s so true.

It’s windy and intermittently raining/cloudy, with small intervals of sun, in O’side/Vista area (Sorry, not officially Orange County, but really close!) Many times OC will get rain, and SDCo won’t get a drop.

  • elizabeth says:

No rain in Fullerton yet, not even a cloud in the sky. It is sunny and clear. :(

  • lsdkfjsdkj says:

See the clouds rolling into La Habra now, and waiting to see the rain.

  • Dean says:

This is why I like to escape to my little condo up in Portland during the fall… it rains almost everyday…and snow. Ahhhh.

    • OC4truth says:

It was sure snowy up there last Christmas, or actually more the week before. I was visiting my brother and they didn’t plow the roads in his neighborhood in E Portland. About 13 in in brother’s front yard.

I’m wondering what it will be like this year. Heading up there again for Christmas.

  • deedee says:

I also felt the earthquake. My plate collection lost some lovely pieces. It was a rolling motion that lasted about 30 seconds.

  • Scott says:

Still sunny here in Placentia. There are some clouds in the sky, but doesn’t look like rain.

Earthquake? Didn’t feel it or know there was one.

  • Richard Deight says:

Must be why there’s hardly a cloud in the sky.

    • Look to the east. There are lots of clouds.

      • jbinoc says:

Unless you live in the “east” then look up or look west. So maybe rather than saying east it would be useful to say precisely where.

      • jbinoc says:

Interesting Gary…what happened to my legitimate comment? I proposed that saying exactly where the clouds are is more useful than saying “look east.” Some here may live in the “east” and be sitting under perfectly blue skies.

What are the moderation requirements were violated and is questioning/challenging the writer not permitted? Nothing said was offensive or vulgar.

  • Blue On Black says:

Hate rain except for taking out my truck and rooster tailing in big puddles but that only happens when it pours.

  • whitehomie says:

    It is gorgeous in Tustin

  • Blue On Black says:

HATE RAIN (except when it downpours then I take my big truck out and rooster tail in the big puddles)

  • lincoln says:

I’m home in bed with the flu so I would love to have some rain to look at.
Thunder and lightning will be better to watch than the bad stuff on TV. The sound of the rain might even help me sleep.

    • OC4truth says:

I wish you well. I apparently had the flu and maybe something else. It really knocked me out. 4 weeks sick. Now 5 weeks and not sick but still not all the way recovered. Of course I would get caught up in these comments at night and not get enough sleep which didn’t help.

  • Lady A says:

The rain will hold off until the exact moment I arrive at my storage unit to empty it out.

  • I love Southern California says:

I hate when it never rains where i live. I live here near south coast plaza and there are no clouds, its sunny and a bit breezy. Agg! i wanted it to rain!

  • KeithM says:

What happened to the MASSIVE EL NINO we were supposed to have this year?

    • KeithM: The CPC did not forecast a massive El Nino. At various times, the government has said El Nino would be weak, moderate, and moderate-to-strong. Over the past 10 days, CPC issued a statement said that El Nino, which seemed to be on the wane, was surging back to life. But there’s been no forecast of a massive El Nino.

      • Hey says:

And also, El Nino doesn’t really kick in until January and usually lasts until late spring/early summer.

  • jimbo says:

orange parks acres, clear and sunny. what rain.

    • The NWS kept switching the chance of thunderstorms. At 5 p.m. yesterday, they said 50 percent. Then it fell to 40 percent. Then it rose to 80 percent. Then the sun came out. Then thick cumulus wrapped around the peak of the Santa Ana Mountains. The weather service isn’t being wishy-washy, so to speak. The thing is, it is very difficult to forecast weather in Southern California because most of our weather comes off the ocean and the satellites provide limited information. It is far different in places like Denver, where forecasters use ground stations to track something moving their way. Still, I’d like to be able to provide readers with forecasts that are spot-on ….

  • jimbo says:

and another thing. this site is stil on PDT>

  • Paul says:

It’s chilly enough here in Huntington Beach to have the furnace going. I see some cumulus and other kinds of clouds over the ocean heading inland. BTW, my computer clock says 11:01 AM.

  • Eric C. says:

In Anaheim the forecast was 30-40% for the last two days, and not even a trace amount fell. I am certain there won’t be any rain today even though the forecast is 70% for thunderstorms.

  • icedamericano says:

Promises, promises…. I keep watching but even though there are a few dark clouds it’s mostly clear and sunny.

  • Eric Cooper says:

startiing to get some dark clouds passing over Los Alisos area of Lake Forest/Mission Viejo…REALLY dark to the east

  • newportbob says:

Stored my Speedo for the season. Others suggested I should have done it long ago (1980’s) however I hung on as long as I could.

  • Eric Cooper says:

raining now,but just showers (Lake Forest)

  • BILL S says:

CAPISTRANO BEACH WE HAD HEAVY RAIL AND LITE HAIL AROUND 9;00 AM TODAY ABOUT 1/4 OF A INCH BY 11;00 SUNNY AND WINDY

  • bobbyc says:

Looks like this one is fizzling out without too much drama. No lightening, however did get some heavy rain early this morning.

  • homeatlast says:

What’s it going to be like for my Dad coming through the Grapevine later this evening?

  • Joe says:

Can’t believe no one has reported the hail (ice balls) that came out of the sky this AM in the Dana Point area! Pretty cool!

  • Bluewaterbabies says:

Oh darn. I was hoping for rain.

  • happy says:

Huntington Beach -no rain today, just gorgeous weather. Windy and cold with full sunshine. Love it=)

  • happy says:

I posted at 6:38. Someone didn’t change their clock. LOL

  • ke6kzr says:

No rain at all in Irvine. What happened?

  • OC4truth says:

We apparently had some rain overnight in Aliso Viejo right near Laguna Niguel. It was nice and sunny when I woke up but the walks were wet and I could see that it rained enough to wash some dirt off my car and just mess up the rest, LOL.

Haven’t been home all day so don’t know what happened here, but from Huntington Beach I could see the clouds toward the East in the early afternoon and then they seemed to be drifting West. They always seem to hang out closer to the hills/mountains. We used to get more rain in Mission Viejo near the Lake than areas closer to the 5 fwy.

  • Justinsmom says:

i live in south-central anaheim. no pun intended. only a spattering of rain around 4 pm, just enuf to ruin my laborous car wash that i saved 15 bucks on. i also thought the grapevine and cajon pass were in different locations. and……….my blogs always get posted immediately. thanks to gary the science dude!

  • Eddie says:

This time, it was the southern areas of OC, the inland areas and San Diego county that received rain. Central OC and north hardly received a drop!

Blue on Black….hate rain??? why don’t you move to Yuma, Death Valley or Arica, Chile…I hear it rarely rains there….maybe .01 a year if you’re lucky.
